New Delhi: Former Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar himself checked university records at Avadh University, but could not find his name in the official register, say sources in Delhi Police.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was taken to four places including Faizabad and Ayodhya, by Delhi Police to verify his claims of having completed his Bachelor of Science (B.SC) degree in 1986-87 from the university in Uttar Pradesh.

Sources in police say the university has confirmed to them, that no one by the name of Jitender Singh Tomar was enrolled for B.Sc programme. Officials reportedly told the police that no Right to Information (RTI) query was ever filed or answered by the university, as claimed by the former minister.

Mr Tomar was arrested this Tuesday on charges of cheating and forgery after a complaint by Bar Council of Delhi .

Police has focused their probe on how a fake B.SC degree was used by the 49 year old to get enrolment into Bachelor of Law (LLB) course in Bihar University. He claims to have completed his law degree from the Bishwanath Singh Institute of Legal Study College, Munger in 1999; the college is affiliated to Tilka Majhi University in Bihar.

Sources believe that the migration certificate used to gain admission in the university appears to be fake, which was issued from Bundelkhand University. Though Mr Tomar's name exists in the college register where he completed his LLB, he does not have any mark sheet of the degree he allegedly possesses.

Officials of Bihar University are likely to be summoned by Police for further investigation. Police took the AAP leader to Saket court this evening, where they were granted his custody for two more days.
