Dadri Tense As Akhlaq Murder Suspect's Family Refuses To Cremate Him: 10 Updates

Ravi Sisodia was arrested last year for the murder of Mohammad Akhlaq.

New Delhi: Dadri in Uttar Pradesh is tense again as the family of a 22-year-old murder accused refuses to cremate his body till the jailer at the prison where he was lodged is arrested. Ravi Sisodia's family has alleged he was murdered.

Here are the latest developments

  1. Angry residents of Ravi's Bisara village have draped his body in the Indian flag. There is massive police deployment and large gatherings have been banned.

  2. Ravi was one of 18 people arrested last year for the murder of Mohammad Akhlaq, 50, over suspicion that he had stored and eaten beef. The mob murder had led to weeks of communal tension in the area, not far from capital Delhi.

  3. Right wing leader Sadhvi Prachi of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, an organisation linked to the BJP, visited the village today and made a speech attacking the Samajwadi Party government in UP for not offering compensation to Ravi's family, which has demanded one crore.

  4. Sadhvi Prachi has also demanded that the 14 others in jail for Akhlaq's murder - three minors were given bail - be shifted out of UP to prisons in Delhi or other places. Those in jail include a local BJP leader Sanjay Rana's son, Vishal.

  5. Ravi was lodged at the Kasna jail in Uttar Pradesh for nearly a year. On Tuesday, he complained of acute pain in his stomach and was taken to a hospital in Delhi, where he died from "kidney and respiratory failure," doctors said.

  6. The young man's body was brought to his village last night after a post mortem, which will establish cause of death. The police have not made the post mortem report public yet.

  7. Ravi's family has alleged that "he was kept in a separate cell by jail authorities and mercilessly beaten up by some police officials inside jail on September 30." They also said they suspect he was poisoned.

  8. ML Yadav, the jailer at the Kasna prison has denied the family's allegations. He has, however, said that the medical facilities at the prison hospital are inadequate.

  9. The villagers have also demanded the arrest of Mohammad Akhlaq's brother, Jaan Mohammad, who has been named along with other members of his family in a case of alleged cow slaughter.

  10. Two investigations have been ordered into Ravi Sisodia's death by the Akhilesh Yadav government in UP, where crucial assembly elections will be held early next year.
