Controversial Punjab Cop, Questioned In Pathankot Probe, Accused Of Rape

Salwinder Singh was on Thursday accused of rape and bribery in a police complaint.

Gurdaspur: Controversial Punjab police officer Salwinder Singh, who was questioned by the National Investigation Agency over the Pathankot terror attack, was on Thursday accused of rape and bribery in a police complaint.

A police case was filed against him following a departmental inquiry on a complaint given to chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.

"A government employee had given complaint against Salwinder Singh accusing him of sexually assaulting his wife and seeking a bribe of Rs 59,000 in 2014. A case was registered after departmental inquiry," said Parminder Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Gurdaspur.

Salwinder Singh is also facing a probe into alleged sexual harassment charges levelled against him by some female constables.

Salwinder Singh, who was a Superintendent of Police in Punjab's Gurdaspur, which borders Pakistan, had claimed that his cook and jeweler friend were abducted along with him by the terrorists who later attacked the Pathankot air base in January.

The terrorists took away his official car and used it to enter Pathankot, where they attacked the air force base, one of the largest and more sensitive military installations in the western sector close to the India-Pakistan border, on January 2.

Seven security personnel were killed and 20 were injured in the attack.
