'Challenge us And We Will Gouge Out Eyes,' Threatens Mamata Banerjee's Nephew Abhishek

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek has publicly threatened to "gouge out the eyes and chop off hands" of anyone who dares to hurt Bengal's interests.

Abhishek, a first time Trinamool Congress parliamentarian, made the aggressive remarks while addressing a meeting in North 24 Paragana district, about 30 minutes from Kolkata, in the presence of several senior leaders of the party.

"Those who dare to look us in the eye, we can gouge their eyes out and throw them on the road. Show us your hands and we can cut them off," Abhishek said, adding, "But remember, it is the common man who will have the last word."

27-year-old Abhishek heads the party's youth wing. He was speaking in the run-up to the July 21 martyrs' day held by the party to honour 13 activists shot dead in police firing in 1993.

A First Information Report of FIR has been filed against Abhishek by the BJP at a police station in Kolkata.

"If they think they will scare people by using such language there will be a revolution in Bengal," said GVL Narasimha Rao, a spokesperson of the BJP, which has mounted a campaign in the state ahead of next year's assembly polls.

In January this year, Abhishek was slapped by a young man who got on the stage after a rally and lunged at the politician.

Last year, Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress had to face many embarrassing questions after a prominent parliamentarian, actor Tapas Pal, said at a public meeting: "If the CPM people touch a hair on the head of my workers, I will set my boys upon their women to rape them." It took months for the state police to file an FIR against Mr Pal.
