Police case against minister for demanding dowry

Police case against minister for demanding dowry
Lucknow: A court in Uttar Pradesh has ordered the police to file a case against a state minister for allegedly demanding Rs 50 lakh in dowry for his son.

On Monday, NDTV reported on Preeti Pal, a nurse, who said UP's Sports Minister, Ayodhya Prasad Pal, called off her engagement to his son because her father did not pay Rs 50 lakh in dowry.

The police since then has refused to file a police case based on Preeti's complaint. So, a court has now told the police to register a First Information Report (FIR) immediately against the minister and his son, Om.

Preeti, a 25-year-old nurse, was engaged in October to Om. At that time, her father says, he gifted Rs three lakh to the minister.

In December, Preeti says her father was told to pay another fifty lakh or forget the wedding. "I went to his house several times. He did not meet me. His relatives told me that if I pay up Rs 50 lakh, only then will the wedding take place, says Preeti's father, Prabal Pratap Pal.
