Uday Gore, a 38-year-old priest, was killed on Monday night when a speeding car hit his bike in Thane.

Gore, a resident of Thane, was on his way home after performing wedding rituals when the mishap occurred.

The accident happened around 11.45 pm. Soon after, people staged a rasta roko which resulted in a traffic jam on Thane-Belapur road for 30 minutes.

"Gore's bike was hit by a speeding car near Vithawa naka. After hitting the bike, the car owner tried running away.

Our police on wireless spread a word and caught him," said PI Malche, Kalwa police station.

"Raju Munnar, a resident of Thane (west) was arrested and our enquiry is on. We have sent his blood samples to investigate whether he was in a drunken state at the time of the accident," he added.

Gore is survived by his wife and two children -- a 12-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son

"Gore died on the spot. He performed rituals at weddings for a living and was the sole bread earner for the family. This morning too, he had an appointment to perform rituals at a wedding," said Malche.

The Kalwa police has booked Munnar in a case of rash driving and death caused by negligence.
