Man conned women on promise of marriage, caught

Chennai: A 34-year-old man, who allegedly cheated a number of women of lakhs of rupees after promising to marry them, has been arrested, police said.

Following a complaint by one of the victims, police laid a trap and nabbed Ravichandran alias Ashok who allegedly cheated her after coming across her profile through a matrimony exchange.

Suburban Police Commmissionerate officials deployed a woman sub-inspector (SI) as a decoy to nab him, an official press release here said.

The woman SI spoke with him on phone saying she was an IT professional and that her marriage had been cancelled.

The accused introduced himself as a jeweller and offered to take her to select jewels. When he came to pick her up on Sunday, he was arrested, the release stated.

Police claimed Ravichandran told them he had cheated women from Bangalore, Chennai, Sathyamangalam and Tharapuram, after winning their confidence and later persuading them to part with money under some pretext.

The victims had lost sums ranging between Rs one and two lakhs, the release said, adding though the man claimed to be an MBA graduate, he had only passed X standard, it said.
