Hindu, Muslim wives in Kerala donate kidneys to each other's husbands

Kochi: Two Kerala women from different religious backgrounds have donated their kidneys to each other's husbands.

Abdul Majeed, 51, of Thanur and Balakrishnan, 37, of Perunthaloor, both from Malappuram, got a new lease of life when Majeed's wife Thahira (41) donated her kidney to Balakrishnan whose wife Bindu (34), donated her kidney to save the life of Majeed.

The two families were brought together by the transplantation counselling department of PVS Hospital here where they were operated upon, and the wives agreed to swap their kidneys as there were no legal issues, a hospital release said.

The wives could not donate their kidneys to their own husbands as they had different blood groups.

The hospital made arrangements to perform the four surgeries, including the two transplantation surgeries, within a gap of one week. Majeed was operated upon on October 15 last year while Balakrishnan was operated upon on October 22, the release said. The patients have recovered and have been discharged, it said.
