No immediate plan to meet Narendra Modi, says US ambassador Nancy Powell
Gurgaon: US Ambassador Nancy J Powell today said she did not have any plan "right now" to meet Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of poll-bound Gujarat.

"We have very good relations with Gujarat in terms of our companies being very active there. Our Consulate in Mumbai is a frequent visitor to Gujarat and will continue to do that...I don't have any plans right now... We do not go to any poll bound states," she said at the World Economic Forum on India in Gurgaon.

Ms Powell was responding to a question whether she has plans to meet Mr Modi following British High Commissioner James Bevan meeting him last month.

Britain last month had ended its decade-long boycott of Gujarat with Mr Bevan meeting Mr Modi to mark a "cordial beginning" to fresh ties, with the two discussing opportunities for greater economic cooperation.

The US had refused visa to Mr Modi after the 2002 post-Godhra riots.

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake last month had said Mr Modi was free to apply for visa now and the system will take its course. The statement had come days within the UK ended its boycott of the state.
