US designates Indian Mujahideen as terror group

Washington: The US State Department has designated Indian Mujahideen, a group blamed for dozens of bomb attacks that have killed hundreds in India in the past six years, as a terrorist organization.

The designation announced on Thursday prohibits the provision of material support or transactions with the group, and the freezing of any property it has in the United States.

A statement said Indian Mujahideen is based in India with significant links to Pakistan-based terror groups, and helped facilitate the 2008 Mumbai attacks carried out by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

Indian Mujahideen is suspected in a bombing outside a New Delhi court last week that killed 12 people.

The statement said the group's ultimate goal is an Islamic Caliphate across South Asia.
