Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was lit up in blue to mark the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.
More than 200 iconic monuments in nearly 60 countries lit up in blue today to mark the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.
The celebration kicked off in New Zealand and Australia with the Sydney Opera House turning blue to commemorate the UN Day. In India, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was lit up blue to mark the day.
Landmarks such as the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, New York's Empire State Building, Tokyo's SkyTree Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, Diana The Huntress Fountain in Mexico, the Hermitage in Russia, Edinburgh Castle and Central Hall Westminster in the UK, and Alhambra in Spain, light in blue to help mark the founding of the UN.
On October 24, 1948 the founding document was ratified by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.
"The timeless values of the UN Charter must remain our guide. Our shared duty is to 'unite our strength' to serve 'we the peoples,'" Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his message for the UN Day.
"To mark this anniversary, monuments and buildings across the world are being illuminated in UN blue. As we shine a light on this milestone anniversary, let us reaffirm our commitment to a better and brighter future for all," Mr Ki-moon said.
