Shubhanshu Shukla's First Remarks From ISS: "Will Get Used To Space In Few Days"

Speaking after marking the historic presence of an Indian astronaut for the first time on the International Space Station and the second visit of an Indian to space, Shubhanshu Shukla said he will get used to the no-gravity environment in a few days.

In a message in Hindi, he said, "I have reached safely. Standing here looks way, but it is slightly difficult. My head is heavy, but we will be used to this in a few days. I am ver excited to conduct the experiments."

He added that it is a privilege to "see the earth from a vantage point.". "The minute I entered the International Space Station, this crew made me feel so welcome. You literally opened the doors to your house for us. It was fantastic. I am very confident that the next 14 days are going to be amazing - as you said - advancing science and research and working together," he added.

What Will Shubanshu Shukla Do On The ISS?

Aboard the ISS, Shubhanshu Shukla will conduct pioneering India-specific experiments in space. These include studying 'water bears' - microscopic organisms - to understand how living things adapt to microgravity.

These studies also include examining muscle regeneration, growth of sprouts, survival of tiny aquatic organisms, and human interaction with electronic displays in microgravity.

The research will also study the effects of microgravity and space radiation on edible microalgae -- a nutrient-rich, high-potential food source for future space missions. The experiment will evaluate key growth parameters and examine transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic changes in different algal species in space compared to their behaviour on Earth.

"When the ride started, it was something - you getting pushed back in the seat. It was an amazing ride. And then suddenly nothing. You are floating in a vacuum," he added while recounting his space experience.

"I am learning like a baby; how to walk and eat in space," he added.

Most Thrilling Part About Being In Space? India's 1st Astronaut Shares...

India's first astronaut Rakesh Sharma said returning to Earth aboard the Soyuz spacecraft was the most thrilling experience of his space travel and for a moment he thought he would not make it back safely.

Mr Sharma said he was not worried about the launch phase of his space journey because everything was controlled by a computer. "The reentry was more thrilling because I thought I wouldn't make it... That's when the parachute opens, and there's a lot of sound inside for which we were unprepared," he said, recounting the experience of the return journey.

Mr Sharma was selected for the Soviet Interkosmos mission in January 1982 and he flew aboard the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on April 3, 1984. He spent seven days, 21 hours and 40 minutes in the space and returned to Earth on April 11.

What Shubhanshu Shukla Told His Parents Hours Before Lift-Off To Space

Hours before his historic journey to space, Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, preparing to board a SpaceX spacecraft bound for the International Space Station (ISS), shared a message with his family: "Just wait for me, I'm coming."

Early in the morning today, his mother performed an Indian ritual. She "fed him" dahi cheeni, a mixture of yoghurt and sugar, virtually, via video call. It is a tradition observed by many Indian households before embarking upon anything important, believed to bring good luck. "We just told him to go and complete his mission, and then we will meet again," his mother told NDTV.

"These are tears of joy. Maybe because he is going so far away," said his sister. "We don't have any scale for how excited we can be. We are happy and proud. But it's a kind of mix of emotions."

"Before leaving for the mission, when he was getting ready, he spoke to us. He was smiling. He was happy. He was waiting for this moment for a long time," she added.

Israel Iran War LIVE: When Trump-Musk Showdown Threatens US Space Plans

The mission comes after of an explosive online spat between US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, the world's richest person and, until recently, Trump's ally and advisor. Trump threatened to yank SpaceX's federal contracts -- worth tens of billions of dollars -- prompting Musk to threaten an early retirement of Dragon, the only American spacecraft currently certified to carry astronauts to the ISS.

Musk walked back the threat a few hours later and in the days that followed, sought to distance himself further, writing on X that he had gone "too far."

Any rupture between SpaceX and the US government would be massively disruptive, given NASA and the Pentagon's reliance on Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy to send up crew, cargo, satellites and probes. But for now, analysts believe both sides are too entangled to risk a serious break.

The upcoming flight marks the debut of the fifth and final Crew Dragon vehicle, which will be named once it reaches orbit, joining Endeavour, Resilience, Endurance and Freedom in the active fleet.  SpaceX ultimately plans to phase out its current vehicles in the 2030s in favor of Starship, its giant next-generation rocket currently in development.
