Washington: A speeding car crashed into a crowd watching a parade in the US state of Oklahoma on Saturday, killing at least three people and injuring two dozen others, media reported.

The driver of the vehicle is in custody following the incident at an Oklahoma State University homecoming parade, broadcaster News On 6 reported.

It said the mayor of the town of Stillwater confirmed three fatalities and said that 27 people had been taken to hospital.

NBC, citing police, said the 25-year-old woman driver was under the influence.

The Stillwater News Press quoted one eye witness as saying that, at first, people thought the car was part of the show.

But then panic ensued.

"People were flying 30 feet (10 meters) into the air like rag dolls," the newspaper quoted Konda Walker as saying.

The university tweeted it was "saddened by the tragic parade incident earlier this morning. Our thoughts & prayers are with those affected."
