A Ryanair passenger was removed from an aircraft after being filmed climbing into an overhead storage bin during a flight from Malta to Naples, Italy. The incident has since gone viral on social media, after it was shared on TikTok. According to reports, the incident took place on April 18 while the aircraft was on the ground preparing to depart. The video showed a male passenger standing on his seat before hoisting himself into the overhead luggage compartment, an area strictly reserved for cabin baggage.

The footage shows the passenger lifting one leg into the overhead bin and attempting to push his body inside, drawing audible reactions from nearby passengers. At one point, he can be heard loudly repeatedly asking, “Napoli”, referencing to the Italian name of Naples. The clip was uploaded to TikTok with a caption quoted by People magazine, where the user wrote, “How not to pay for the return ticket to Naples. But they caught me…”

The video suggests the act was intended as a joke rather than an attempt to hide, though it quickly escalated into a safety issue.

Crew Intervention And Removal From Flight

According to Aviation A2Z, cabin crew intervened shortly after the incident and instructed the passenger to come down from the overhead bin. The passenger was subsequently removed from the aircraft before take‑off. The flight departed later without further disruption. No injuries were reported, and Ryanair has not publicly confirmed whether the passenger faced additional penalties beyond being denied travel on that flight.

The Incident Raises Safety Concerns

As noted by AirTraveler Club, overhead storage bins are not designed to carry weight beyond approved cabin baggage and pose a serious safety risk when misused. Such behaviour can endanger both the individual involved and other passengers, especially if bins are damaged or opened during turbulence.

Airline safety rules strictly prohibit passengers from accessing overhead compartments during boarding or flight operations.

Ryanair Has Not Issued A Statement

At the time of reporting, Ryanair had not released a specific statement addressing the incident. However, airline policies clearly state that disruptive behaviour can result in removal from the aircraft. The incident adds to a growing list of unusual onboard behaviour captured in the age of social media.
