Wildlife enthusiasts, be all ears - you are in for a treat. This winter season, take a break, pack your bags and step into the snowy wonderland of Uttarakhand. Otherwise, you might miss the rare opportunity to witness the majestic snow leopard. Yes, you read that right. The Uttarakhand government is set to launch a Snow Leopard Tour to boost winter tourism in the state. Since Uttarakhand is largely frequented during the summer and autumn months, this initiative aims to reposition the hill state as a must-visit winter destination.
According to State Tourism Secretary Dhiraj Garbyal, the Snow Leopard Tour will be implemented on a pilot basis in Gangotri National Park in Uttarkashi district. In addition, other high Himalayan regions, including Gangotri, will welcome tourists in a controlled manner during winter. The opening date of the tour is yet to be announced.

Snow leopards, also known as the Ghost of the Mountains, are elusive creatures that camouflage perfectly within snowy and rocky terrains. Apart from the Snow Leopard Tour, tourists can also enjoy vibrant winter carnivals in Mussoorie, Nainital and Uttarkashi. Rishikesh will host an International Yoga Festival. Meanwhile, wildlife tourism will extend to Jim Corbett, Nandaur and Gangotri regions. The tour is part of a broader winter tourism plan, which also includes the Char Dham Yatra and adventure activities such as skiing, trekking, paragliding and rappelling. These activities are scheduled to be organised in Auli, Khalia Top and Bednidhar.

Top 5 Spots To Witness Snow Leopards In Uttarakhand
1. Gangotri National Park
Located in Uttarakhand's Garhwal Himalayas, this park is famous for the challenging Gaumukh-Tapovan trek leading to the Ganga's origin, along with the Kedartal and Nandanvan-Vasuki Tal treks. The vast protected area features stunning glacial landscapes, coniferous forests and meadows, and takes travellers to the source of the holy Ganga River (Gaumukh). Besides snow leopards, visitors may also get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness other abundant wildlife here, including blue sheep, bears and the Himalayan Monal.

India's first Snow Leopard Conservation Centre, which is being established in the Uttarkashi forest region of Uttarakhand by the Uttarakhand Forest Department and UNDP under the 'SECURE Himalayas' project, aims to aid conservation efforts of the elusive snow leopard and its habitat. Located near Gangotri National Park, it also provides tourists with valuable information about the region's wildlife.
3. Govind Pashu Vihar National Park And Sanctuary
Located in the Supin Range of Uttarkashi district, this sanctuary is a second home to snow leopards and another popular trekking destination. Critical to snow leopard conservation, the region also offers breathtaking views of the natural landscape.
