Canada is known for its blue lakes, snow-covered mountains, forests and scenic road trips. But in British Columbia, there is a lake that looks quite different from the usual landscapes travellers associate with the country. Spotted Lake, located near the town of Osoyoos, is known for its unusual pattern of round, colourful pools that become more visible as the water evaporates during the hot summer months.
The spots can appear in shades of blue, green and yellow, giving the lake a look that is hard to miss. It is a natural attraction that offers travellers a different reason to explore Canada.
Known as kłlilx'w to the Syilx people of the Okanagan, Spotted Lake is rich in minerals, including calcium, sodium sulphates and magnesium sulphate. As the water level drops in summer, these minerals become concentrated and form the distinct spots seen across the lake.
What Makes Canada's Spotted Lake Special?
Spotted Lake gets its unusual appearance from the minerals found in its water. During summer, much of the water evaporates under the heat, leaving behind mineral-rich pools separated by pale mineral deposits. Each spot can have a different colour depending on its mineral content, with shades ranging from blue and green to yellow.
The pattern changes as the weather and water levels change. This makes summer a particularly interesting time to see the lake.
