Travel has a way of making people rethink what they want from life. For some, it means taking a short break from work, while for others, it can mean leaving behind a stable career altogether to chase the freedom of exploring new places.
One tech professional named Saksham Raj Seth chose the latter, walking away from an Rs 85 lakh annual package to pursue travel content full-time. While he made the leap, his partner Smriti Sidana continued working as a software engineer for a Rs 1.5 lakh monthly salary.
"The decision wasn't really about disliking the job or wanting to stop working. Over time, my life had become quite monotonous work took up most of my time, and I felt that I was earning well but had very little freedom over how I spent that time," Saksham said in an interview with Hindustan Times.
"I eventually realised that I wanted to value freedom and experiences more than earning a high salary. Since we were already creating travel content together and had been seriously considering this lifestyle, I decided to take the risk and give content creation a full-time shot," he added.

Saksham shared that the decision wasn't made overnight. He said walking away from a Rs 85 lakh salary meant consciously giving up financial security and a comfortable lifestyle to pursue a path that came with far more uncertainty.
The content creator said, “The biggest hurdle is the uncertainty. When you leave a stable, well-paying job, you don't suddenly have another equally stable source of income waiting for you. My content creation income is currently nowhere close to what he was earning as a software engineer, so financially it has definitely been a step down”.
Saksham added that the challenge goes beyond simply leaving a high-paying job, as there is also the pressure of making a new career succeed. He pointed out that content creation comes without a fixed salary, guaranteed growth or a defined career path. It requires creators to constantly produce content, experiment with new ideas, approach brands and figure out what works best.
“Another challenge is building a lifestyle that is actually sustainable rather than treating travel like a permanent vacation. We are learning to balance work, content creation, finances and personal time while moving between different places," he said.
Smriti, who is a software engineer by profession, also creates travel and lifestyle content part-time. She claimed that while their life has become more uncertain, it also feels more purposeful. "The biggest change for Saksham is having control over his time. Instead of spending most of his day working and waiting for weekends or holidays, he can decide how he wants to structure his day,” she said.

However, Smriti stressed that the lifestyle should not be romanticised. "Being a full-time creator is still work. There are shoots, editing, brand negotiations, planning, pitching and the pressure of constantly creating something people want to watch," she explained.
