The aviation scenario in India is officially expanding from just land to water. The country is now gearing up to launch its first dedicated commercial seaplane services. India's first commercial seaplane operator, SkyHop Aviation, has received its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The airline is now legally cleared to operate commercial flights in India, marking a major milestone. In fact, the company had already conducted successful water take-offs and landings earlier this month in Rishikesh.

India's First Seaplane Airline Gets Green Signal

With the approval from the DGCA, SkyHop is all set to become India's first commercial seaplane airline. The first phase of operations will focus on the stunning islands of Lakshadweep. The route will connect five islands internally and will also link them to the Indian mainland. The services will begin with a 19-seater aircraft. This is huge because Lakshadweep has limited airport infrastructure, and inter-island travel can be slow and complicated. Seaplanes could cut travel time dramatically and make island-hopping seamless.

This new commercial airline will connect remote islands, hill regions, and waterfront destinations that struggle with airport construction. It would also impact journeys that used to take hours or days via boats or road, shrinking the travel time significantly. Consequently, locations like Lakshadweep, with lakes, beaches, and riversides, will also get a major tourism boost.

What Exactly Are Seaplanes?

A seaplane is an aircraft designed to take off and land on water instead of a traditional runway. It uses floating pontoons or a boat-like hull to take off from or land on open water bodies like lakes, rivers, or seas. Yes, it only needs a suitable stretch of water. And for India, with its long coastline, rivers, and island territories, this could be a game-changer.

According to Economic Times, founder Avani Singh shares that getting the AOC is the result of consistent effort over the past year and gives the company confidence to move forward. In a post on Instagram, SkyHop highlighted that this step will improve regional access, reduce travel time, and open routes where airports aren't feasible.

Now that the regulatory green light is in place, commercial operations are expected to begin soon, with Lakshadweep routes rolling out first.
