The Supreme Court has held that two pre-independence agreements of 1892 and 1924 between the erstwhile princely state Mysore - now a part of Karnataka - and the Madras Presidency on the allocation of Cauvery river water covers the areas of larger public interest and hence, they are "neither inoperative nor completely extinct".

Setback For Tamil Nadu As Supreme Court Puts Cauvery Management Board On Hold

After angry warnings from the Supreme Court including a reference to the impending "wrath of the law," Karnataka said today that it will follow orders to release water from the River Cauvery to neighbouring Tamil Nadu. But for now, it has to release 2,000 cusecs instead of the 6,000 cusecs a day that was ordered by the court earlier.
