The Kejriwal government is pulling out all the stops to combat stubble burning in the national capital. The government has launched preparations for free bio-decomposer spraying across 5,000 acres of farmland.

The Punjab government has prepared an action plan with an outlay of Rs 500 crore for providing machinery to farmers and taking other measures to check stubble burning in the state, said agriculture minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday stressed the need to stop crop residue burning, which affects air quality in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) and asked state governments to take steps to curb pollution.

Stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana has declined by 27 per cent and 37 per cent as against last year, the Union environment ministry has said.

Gopal Rai said that for the next two days, the situation will remain the same and improve after November 27.

Punjab on Tuesday reported 513 incidents of stubble burning, taking the total number of such cases to 35,606 since September 15. On the same day in 2021 and 2022, the state had seen 168 and 243 farm fires respectively.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday pulled up the AAP governments in Punjab and Delhi over growing incidents of stubble burning. The court was hearing petitions over the rising air pollution that covers the national capital in a blanket of smoke.

Punjab on Monday reported 634 farm fires with farmers in many areas continuing to set ablaze paddy straw despite police making persistent efforts to prevent stubble burning.

Paddy straw burning in Punjab and Haryana is considered one of the reasons behind the alarming spike in air pollution levels in the national capital in October and November.

Punjab Thursday registered 1,150 stubble-burning incidents, taking the total number of such cases to 33,082.

Punjab reported more than 1,200 stubble burning incidents on Thursday, while air quality indices turned 'severe' and 'very poor' in neighbouring Haryana.
