Post Office Accounts: Interest rates on government-run small savings schemes are revised from time to time

For the current quarter, which ends on December 31, these savings schemes provide interest rates to the tune of 4-7.6%

This means existing interest rates will apply on small savings schemes - such as the Public Provident Fund (PPF) - in the quarter ending December 31.

The interest rates applicable to the government-run small saving schemes are reviewed on a quarterly basis.

In the five-year National Savings Certificate scheme, an investment of Rs 1,000 grows to Rs 1,389.49 at maturity, according to India Post.

FD Interest Rate: From April 1, the interest rates for most small savings schemes have been cut up by to 140 basis points.

That stands 80 basis points (0.80 percentage point) lower compared to the interest rate of 8.4 per cent the scheme yielded in the quarter ended March 31.

PPF Interest Rate: A Public Provident Fund account can be set up at designated branches of post office and commercial banks for a lock-in period of 15 years.

Small Savings Scheme Interest Rates: The government reviews the interest rates on small savings schemes such as PPF on a quarterly basis at present. Among other small savings schemes available today, the Time Deposit scheme comes in four maturity options, ranging from one to five years.

NSC interest rate: The minimum amount required for opening an NSC account is Rs 1,000 and in multiple of Rs 100 thereof and there is no maximum limit for amount that can be invested in an NSC account.

Currently, the interest rates applicable to the nine schemes - which include theMonthly Income Scheme (MIS) and the Kisan Vikas Patra certificates - are revised by the government every quarter.
