Army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag today said that the Mountain Strike Corps, aimed at countering threats from China, would be raised as per the schedule by 2021 and termed acquisition of artillery guns and third generation missiles as "critical areas" for modernisation of the force.

Sources said the government is now weighing whether it will make more sense to invest in better technology rather than raise an 80,000 strong force at considerable expense.

The financial sanction given by India's Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Wednesday to raise a Mountain Strike Corps specifically aimed at launching offensive operations against China - if need be - is but a first step in what promises to be a long haul in adding 40,000 new troops to the country's 1.3 million strong Army.
