The Centre clarified that it has worked with states, union territories and development partners towards mitigating negative impacts of COVID-19, and was making efforts to ensure children receive life-saving vaccines.

The UN report points to a significant rise in the number of children aged 5 to 11 years in child labour, who now account for over half of the total global figure.

The report stated that online education is not an option for all as only one in four children has access to digital devices and internet connectivity. Pre-COVID, only a quarter of households (24 per cent) in India had access to the internet and there is a large rural-urban and gender divide.

The Supreme Court had taken suo-motu note in April of the condition of the children in protection, juvenile and foster or kinship homes across the country amid the pandemic, issuing directions to the state governments and other authorities to protect them.
