Heavy rain continued in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, bringing residential neighborhoods and roads under knee-deep water and leading to traffic congestion besides affecting public transport services.

India Meteorological Department officials said a low-pressure area that formed over the Bay of Bengal was the trigger for the widespread rainfall.

As the Tamil Nadu braces for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next three days, Chief Minister M K Stalin has ordered schools and colleges in Chennai to remain closed on October 15.

Since Friday midnight, continuous rainfall in the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya has resulted in 10 deaths and significant damage, including the washing away of bridges and loss of road connectivity.

This move comes after the Regional Meteorological Centre forecasted normal to slightly above normal rainfall during the northeast monsoon.

The heavy rainfall over the past three days has resulted in the season's first snowfall in Thangu (3900 metres) and Gurudongmar Lake (5425 m) in the tundra belt of North Sikkim.

The India Meteorological Department earlier issued a red alert for Mumbai and its adjoining districts Thane, Palghar, and Raigad for Thursday.

Intermittent rainfall over the last few days led to a dip in the mercury levels in the national capital, with the city recording a minimum temperature of 21.1 degrees Celsius on Thursday -- its lowest for September in 14 years.

Delhi has exceeded both its annual and seasonal average rainfall in the early days of September, with total rainfall crossing the 1,000 mm mark-well above the normal level-while residents enjoyed the cleanest air of the year so far on Friday.

Since the monsoon onset in Himachal Pradesh on June 27, the state's rainfall deficit till date stands at 20 per cent.

The national capital has recorded 913.1 mm of rains this monsoon so far which is 56 per cent above the normal, according to weather department data.
