India received overwhelming support in its election to the UN Security Council and it will continue to provide leadership and a new orientation for a reformed multilateral system, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador TS Tirumurti said.

India was elected as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term after winning 184 votes in the 193-member General Assembly.

India's presence in the United Nations Security Council will help bring to the world its ethos of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam", the country's envoy to the global body has said, ahead of elections for the non-permanent seat of the powerful UN organ.

Ahead of June 17 elections to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), India has said that its presence in the world body will help to bring the ethos of ''Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'' (the world is one family) to the world.

The UN General Assembly has decided to hold elections for the five non-permanent members of the Security Council next month under the new voting arrangements due to the COVID-19 restrictions, with India assured a win being the sole contender for the Asia Pacific seat.
