A fire broke out at Bellandur Lake in the Bengaluru district of Karnataka on Thursday evening.

Bengaluru's Bellandur lake has become the largest septic tank in the city due to "sheer callousness and indifference", according to a damning report from a committee mandated by the National Green Tribunal or Green Court, adding that there was "not even one millilitre" of clean water in the lake.

At Bengaluru's 1,000-acre Bellandur Lake, infamous for pollution and toxic foam, a massive fire broke out this afternoon. It took more than 5,000 army personnel and fire-fighting equipment to bring the fire that raged for seven hours under control.

A total of 76 polluting industries around the lake were shut down by the authorities in pursuance to the green panel's order after a mound of garbage was set on fire in February this year, leading to massive pollution in the area.

The National Green Tribunal has directed authorities to close 76 polluting industrial units around Bengaluru's Bellandur lake. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar directed the Bengaluru Deputy Commissioner and the authorities concerned to ensure immediate disconnection of water and electricity supply to these plants.

With the supply from Cauvery drying up, large parts of Bengaluru have become dependent private water tankers. An NDTV investigation found the tankers - which charge between Rs 700 and Rs 1,500 for a single trip - are drawing water from some of the most polluted lakes in the city - including Bellandur, which is perpetually in the news for its pollut...
