Tamil Nadu to Pay Rs 10,000, Build Homes for Chennai's Flood-Affected Families

A package has been announced for crop loss as well.

Chennai: Facing criticism for its poor-preparedness and flood relief, the Tamil Nadu government on Monday said the families that have lost their huts in the Chennai floods will be given Rs 10,000 each.

The government also said that permanent homes would be built for them in a few pockets in south Chennai.

For those whose huts were partially damaged, Rs 5,000 would be given as compensation.

"For families who lost their huts, a flood relief of Rs 10,000, ten kilo rice, a dhoti and saree will be given," an official release by the state government said.

Authorities are now trying to calculate the losses so that they can begin distributing compensation money.

A package has been announced for crop loss as well.

Chennai has been hit by heavy rain since November, which resulted in severe flooding in many parts of the city and neighbouring areas. Nearly 200 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the city.
