Sport Coach Phadke passes away

Pune: Eminent sport coach Gopal Phadke, a recipient of the prestigious 'Dronacharya' award died of old age here.

Phadke(79) passed away last night.

Phadke, also honoured by Maharashtra government with 'ShivChhatrapati' award in 1994-95, devoted his life for spreading and popularising 'desi' sports and played a pivotal role in enhancing the state's performance in Kho-Kho at national level.

After conferring the 'Dronacharya' award in 2000, the Central government had bestowed 'Padmashree' on him in 2003, acknowledging his contribution to the Indian games.

A born sport enthusiast, Phadke had made a short film on 'Kho-Kho' which was screened in the 1982 Delhi Asiad games.

He is survived by two sons.
