Pre-University lecturers in Karnataka withdraw strike

Bangalore: Pre-University lecturers in Karnataka, who have been boycotting evaluation of II-PU answer scripts to press for pay parity, withdrew their strike on Monday.

Earlier in the day, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri held a meeting with representatives of the lecturers' association to break the deadlock.

Kageri reiterated that Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has convened a meeting in Bangalore on April 19 where their demands would be discussed and appealed to them to call off the boycott.

"The government is ready to positively respond to the demands of the lecturers", the Minister said.

Later, core committee comprising representatives of various associations met and decided to withdraw the strike unconditionally, in the interest of parents and students.

"We will attend evaluation from tomorrow. The government has adopted a negative approach and is not ready to meet our demands. What else can we do?", President of Karnataka PU College Lecturers' Association, Thimmaiah Purle told PTI.

Responding with bitterness to the government's decision, he said: "We will not raise our demand again. We have left it to the discretion of the Government".
