Mumbai Civic Body's Job Goes Down The Drain With Potholes Filled Up By Rain Water

With heavy rains in Mumbai, the city's civic body BMC is struggling to keep repaired roads intact.

Mumbai: After rains hit many parts of Mumbai, the roads of the maximum city are dotted with potholes once again. Facing flak from Mumbaikars, a week ago, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had ordered civic bodies to fix potholes across the city within 15 days.

But a week after the directive, not much improvement is seen in the state of roads.

The city's civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC is struggling to keep repaired roads intact. Residents and corporators allege that materials used to fill up potholes wash away due to the rain.

"The BMC and the MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) have failed to tackle potholes. But even the Government is reacting too late", said RTI activist Anil Galgali.

Meanwhile, the potholes remain the reason of angst for daily commuters. "Given the state of the roads, not just my vehicle, but I too suffer daily. My back hurts at the end of the day. Bikers end up skidding on this road if they are not careful", said autorickshaw driver Ismail Sharif while driving on the Milan subway road in Mumbai's Santacruz area, which is just one among the many roads in the city filled with potholes.

Construction materials mount up alongside the road serve as a reminder that the chief minister's 15-day deadline to the civic bodies is fast approaching.

According to BMC, on the September 29 there were 36 potholes in the city that were yet to be repaired. Over 4560 potholes have already been repaired. But now, the BMC seems unwilling to comment on the situation.
