Australian national found dead in Mumbai hotel

Mumbai: An Australian national was found dead at a guest-house in south Mumbai on Tuesday, the police said, ruling out foul play as of now.

Despontaines Aaron (34) was found dead in a first floor room of the Apollo Guest House in Colaba this afternoon by the staff, Deputy Police Commissioner Cherring Dorje said.

According to the police, Aaron had checked in on January 6 and was supposed to check out this afternoon. When one of the staff members went to his room this afternoon, the door of the room was slightly open.

"The staff pushed the door open and saw Aaron lying dead on the bed," Dorje said.

Last night, the foreigner had returned to the guest house very late in a drunken state, Dorje said adding a diary, a mobile phone and other articles belonging to him were recovered from the room.

After going through the diary, it appears that Aaron was depressed, the DCP said.

The foreigner must have died due to overdose of alcohol, he said, adding the body had been taken to a nearby civic-run hospital for post-mortem.

"As of now, there does not appear to be any foul play," the DCP said adding "we are awaiting post-mortem report."

The Australian consulate has been informed about the incident, police said.
