The rainy season is best known for its heavy showers and pattering drizzles but there's a lot more that's swirling in the clouds. There's also high humidity levels present and this atmosphere packed with moisture can be a nightmare for your skin, especially those with oily and acne-prone types. Monsoon climate can lead to increased acne breakouts, fungal infections and excess perspiration amongst more. To tackle them during the rains, NDTV Swirlster spoke to Dr. Anish Desai, the Head of Strategic Medical Affairs and Dr. Sunaina Anand, Medical Affairs Executive at Adroit Biomed Ltd. for their expertise in treating the skin during the rainy season.

Skin Problems During The Monsoon

The monsoon see your skin behave very unpredictably, sometimes being too oily which can lead to breakouts and acne or it can be dry and stretched at other times. A major concern is the tendency to develop fungal infections, especially in the body folds or warm areas such as arm pit, groin and feet.

1. Avoid Getting Wet

Rain water carries impurities and bacteria that may cause skin infection and irritation. If exposed, immediately take a bath and if possible, use antibacterial soap.

2. Wear Loose Clothing

With high humidity and increased sweating, it is important to choose your clothes wisely. Cotton allows skin to breathe and absorbs sweat.

3. Tackle Excess Sweat

If you tend to sweat in excess, use antibacterial dusting powder to prevent prickly heat.

4. Get Rid Of Dirt

Cleanse your face and neck with gel or cream based face wash twice a day to get rid of oil and dirt in your pores. Always pat your skin dry rather rubbing it. Do not use face wash more than twice a day since it may disturb the skin's pH leading to more oil secretion.

5. Don't Stop Toning

Apply toner on your face directly or with cotton. Toner shrinks and closes the open pores and gets rid of impurities.

6. Moisturiser Is Essential

Moisturise your skin with a light moisturizer which is lotion based rather cream based to prevent clogged pores. Though using a moisturiser is almost always associated with winter, it is equally important to use it during monsoon, especially during the nights. Night is the time when the skin tries to repair itself on its own, therefore applying moisturiser helps in averting wrinkles and maintaining glow.

7. Exfoliate

Exfoliation at least once a week will keep dead cells away, consequently keeping it glowing and soft.

8. Sunscreen Always

Similar to a moisturizer, sunscreen is a product whose benefits are strictly associated with summer. But that should not be the case. During monsoon, even though the rays of the sun may not seem harsh, UV rays can damage your skin; therefore don't forget to apply a sunscreen.

9. Watch What You Eat

Water has plenty of advantages and it takes care of the skin as well as hair. Drinking plenty of water during monsoon takes care of the skin. Fruits rich in antioxidants help in maintaining its lustre. Eating oily and junk food show their mark on the skin sooner than later, therefore the trick is to stay away from them and indulge in green vegetables. Your skin will inevitably show the benefits soon.
