When you head out for the day, you probably make sure to slather sunscreen all over your face (if you don't, you should start now) and other parts of your body. We've been taught that sunscreen is important, especially when you live in a tropical country like India - and it really is, for the sake of your skin. But you're probably forgetting all about a part of your body that is just as susceptible to the negative effects of the sun; your scalp.
Not just your arms, legs and face, but all parts of your body need protection from the strong and harmful UV rays of the sun. There is no part of your body that faces the sun as directly as the scalp on a daily basis. Sure, your hair does act as a protective shield, but your scalp can still get burnt where your hair parts - and if you spend too much time outside in the sun, even in other parts.
There are however ways to protect your scalp from heat and sun damage. Here are a few things you can do.
1. Wear a big hat
You might find it odd at first, stepping out of your house in a hat, but it's better than having a scalp that itches and burns. Try and find a broad-brimmed hat that has a good, thick lining on the inside, and if you intend on spending time out in the sun, do make sure to put it on. Buy a hat that is not too tight and gives your hair follicles enough room to breath.
2. Carry an umbrella
You know the people who carry an umbrella when it's as dry as a bone outside, they know something you don't. Shade is your best friend in the summer, so creating permanent shade for yourself is a wise thing to do for the sake of your skin. An umbrella, much like a hat, acts as a protective shield between your scalp and the sun.
3. Use products with Vitamin-E
Try and opt for a shampoo and conditioner that contain Vitamin-E. Products with vitamin E and other antioxidants can help minimize the free-radical damage to the hair and scalp caused by the sun. A leave in conditioner with SPF can also work in protecting your hair from sun damage.
