Gold is thought to be India's most prized metal for jewellery. Walk into a wedding or festive function and you're bound to spot layers of necklaces and arms full of bangles within the first 5 seconds that you enter. But we're not here to talk about gold. It's actually silver that's our topic of conversation. Gold may be a traditional favourite, especially by older generations but that has vastly changed. Silver is now sweeping the jewellery sphere and captivating bauble lovers, especially those who fall in the younger age group.

Why Is Silver Jewellery Popular?

The use of silver in jewellery has become increasingly popular today and there are many reasons why that is so.

  • While yellow gold is glitzy and opulent, silver is preferred for its understated charm. It is ideal for daily use and doesn't attract too much attention.

  • It is versatile and can be worn with multiple outfits, hence doesn't require switching out in between.

  • Silver is said to have auspicious value hence, it is a gifting item that is often presented to babies in the form of spoons or bowls.

  • Its shade is said to stimulate calmness and tranquility.

  • Jewellery aside, silver is also used in crafting luxurious dishware and cutlery which are used for gifting or special occasions.

There are many reasons why the popularity of silver has shot up in recent times. The rise in subtler jewellery sensibilities and increased variety of options for its usage are only a few of them. But have you ever wondered if there's more to the metal than its charm and beauty? Many say there is. Silver is said to lend many benefits to its wearer too. Want to find out what they are? Keep reading.

Benefits Of Wearing Silver Jewellery

Besides its understated glam, these are the benefits that silver is said to lend one's body.

  • It is an antimicrobial agent that can aid in repair of damaged cells, keeping away infection and healing of wounds.

  • It may be able to regulate internal heat produced in the body

  • It may improve energy levels and blood circulation of the body

  • It can help one avoid toxic substances as it changes its colour when reacting to it

The benefits of the metal come from silver's electrical and thermal conductive abilities. It creates an electrical field which, when combined with the body's own conductivity, can lend these benefits to the wearer. Besides its usage in jewellery and handicrafts, silver is also blended in fabric to promote its benefits to the wearer of the garments.

How To Clean Silver Jewellery At Home

If you are the proud owner of silver jewellery, you will know the difficulty of keeping it clean at home since it reacts easily with skin. It is possible to keep it shiny and free from tarnishes without having to drop by the jewellers. To clean silver jewellery at home, turn to these 6 tricks.

1. Hand Sanitizer

Rub your silver jewellery with a few drops of hand sanitizer to restore its gleam once again.

2. Vinegar And Baking Soda

Make a solution of half a cup of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Let your silver sit in it for a couple of hours. Rinse with cold water and air dry it thoroughly.

3. Toothpaste

Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to polish silver with an old toothbrush or rag then wash it off and dry completely.

4. Foil Solution

In 1 litre of water, add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and a single piece of aluminum foil. Bring the mixture to a boil. Drop silver in the mixture for 10-20 seconds, remove and polish it with a rag. Leave it in for few seconds longer if jewellery is highly tarnished.

5. Baking Soda

To 3 tablespoons of baking soda, add a few drops of water enough to make a thick paste. Use it to rub over the mixture with a rag to polish it clean.

6. Rubbing Alcohol

To prevent tarnishing, store 1-2 sticks of chalk in the same drawer as silver for it to absorb moisture.
