So you've put your mind to it and finally decided to kick-start your workout routine, this time for real. The gym membership is booked, you've got your exercise clothing and now, only the most important part is left; buying running shoes. You may think they're just another fashion accessory but running shoes are far more than that. They support your feet, which support your whole body so they need to be picked out extremely carefully. Before you head to buy running shoes, make sure you read these tips first.

1. Don't get pulled into the hype. There are new releases from famous brands every few months and their campaign images with celebrities are splashed all over billboards. It's easy to think it's the right fit for you with imagery like this but don't go blindly into it just because it's trendy and everyone is talking about it.
2. As much as possible, avoid buying your first pair of running shoes online. Even if you get your size right, you'll never be able to predict how supportive or comfortable the shoe feels on your feet.
3. Measure your feet. The size you wear may not necessarily be the same in running shoes. Get them measured by a store assistant for a precise fit.
4. Carry your own socks when trying shoes. Sure the store often has socks ready to try but they may not have the same thickness as your own, which will make them feel different (and possibly tighter) later on. Also, it's much more hygienic.
5. Buy shoes later in the day. By evening, feet have a tendency to expand slightly. Trying shoes during this time will make them more comfortable and less tight when worn.
6. Make sure they aren't too tight. If your toes are pushed against the cap of the shoe, they're wrong for you. No matter how much the store assistant may insist it will get loose with time, remember to keep a finger's worth of space in the front so that the toes don't get cramped or rub against the fabric.
7. Take them for a spin in the store. Walk and run with them in the store to assess if your foot sits or slips at the heels. If it does the latter, don't pick it as it can make walking unsafe.
8. Arch support is important. The arch of your foot needs to be gripped by the shoe firmly but comfortably. If it doesn't, walking or running won't be comfortable over time.
