Kozhikode Airport Violence: 4 CISF Personnel Handed Over to Police, Say Sources

CCTV footage shows CISF personnel going on a rampage after a jawan was killed at the Kozhikode airport on Wednesday

Kozhikode: Four personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force have been handed over to the Kerala Police for investigations into the violence at the airport in Kozhikode on Wednesday night, top CISF sources have told NDTV. The violence was triggered by the death of a CISF head constable who was shot during an argument with airport staff.

CCTV footage showed a riot-like situation at the Karipur International Airport after gunshots were heard which had killed the jawan. The video shows CISF personnel going on a rampage, pulling down pictures from walls and breaking furniture.

Police officials had told NDTV that it took nearly three hours to disarm the agitated CISF men. Senior CISF officials, however, had earlier denied the involvement of any of their personnel in the rampage.

Speaking to NDTV, a top CISF official dismissed reports of security personnel being transferred following the incident on Wednesday.

Eight officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) were arrested on Friday in connection with the death of the 44-year-old jawan.

On Wednesday, CISF constable AS Yadav had allegedly asked AAI official Sunny Thomas to undergo security clearance, which led to an argument. In the violence that followed, Mr Yadav received gunshot injuries and died.

Mr Thomas, who belongs to the fire department, claimed he had come to the airport to take an injured colleague to hospital when he was attacked by CISF personnel.

CISF officials, however, had told NDTV that it was a group of fire department personnel who came in trucks and tried to attack the jawan, who was only "trying to do his duty".

The violence had led to a 10-hour shutdown at the airport and air traffic resumed only on Thursday morning.
