Karnataka Was A Message. Rahul Gandhi Tests New Playbook For Lok Sabha Battle

The Karnataka leadership swap - DK Shivakumar for Siddaramaiah, a switch in the making since November last year - was pushed past the finishing line by Rahul Gandhi, sources told NDTV Friday. Rahul Gandhi, sources said, spoke to both men on Monday and Tuesday, with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, party boss Mallikarjun Kharge, and General Secretary KC Venugopal.

The result was a 35-minute one-on-one in which Rahul Gandhi persuaded Siddaramaiah to resign, arguing the veteran politician - one of the Congress' most high-profile OBC faces - had to look beyond the state and at the national picture,

The 'big picture' message was the 2029 Lok Sabha election. But Siddaramaiah argued the Congress' best chance at re-election was with him in charge. DKS, he said, could take charge of a fresh government in 2028. But Gandhi was adamant, sources said, displaying the same awareness that helped the Congress resolve the impasse in the Kerala chief minister race.

DK Shivakumar's Next Challenge: Overturn 4-Decade-Old Trend Within 2 Years

The Congress high command has decided to change the chief minister in Karnataka after three years in power. Following Siddaramaiah's resignation, DK Shivakumar is set to become the next chief minister.

The Congress has taken this major decision with an eye on the upcoming assembly elections, scheduled to take place two years from now. In this context, the question arises: how advantageous will it be for the Congress to switch chief ministers in the middle of its tenure?

The ultimate test of this move lies in the next assembly elections. For the last four decades, no government in Karnataka has managed to secure a re-election. Even after governing from 2013 to 2018, Siddaramaiah was unable to lead the Congress to a majority victory in the subsequent polls. Will DK Shivakumar be able to rewrite four decades of political history within just two years?

An experienced leader within the Karnataka Congress suggests that it would be premature to make any predictions regarding this change at this stage. Shivakumar is perceived as a hardworking "fighter" - a leader who has risen through the ranks, starting his journey in the NSUI, the Congress party's student wing. He shares a close rapport with the Gandhi family. Consequently, he will be able to function without undue pressure and have the capability to mitigate the effects of anti-incumbency.

Karnataka Live Updates: Congress Leaders Back DK Shivakumar For Chief Minister Post

Karnataka politics witnessed a major development on Thursday after senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah confirmed that he would step down as Chief Minister, bringing an end to the prolonged leadership tussle within the party over the state's top post.

The announcement also put to rest months of speculation surrounding the power-sharing arrangement between Siddaramaiah and his deputy D.K. Shivakumar that had frequently dominated political discussions and at times threatened to overshadow the functioning of the government in the state.

Siddaramaiah also confirmed that Shivakumar would succeed him, paving the way for a leadership transition within the Karnataka Congress.

Reacting to the development, Maharashtra Congress MLA, Vijay Wadettiwar, said the transition was linked to earlier discussions within the party before the elections.

"Before the elections, there were some discussions, and this is all related to that. Siddaramaiah is a very senior and respected leader in our party. He will be given due respect in the party, as he has made a significant contribution and has done good work as Chief Minister," Wadettiwar said.

He further added, "In this situation, bringing in new leadership and youth leadership while respecting senior leaders and giving them good positions and opportunities to work, is a positive step."

Supporters of Shivakumar also expressed enthusiasm over the expected change in leadership. Karnataka Sena Pade District President Tejesh Lokesh Gowda said prayers were offered for Shivakumar to become the next Chief Minister.

Karnataka Live Updates: "Their Interest Is Not Karnataka's Development": State BJP Chief Slams Congress

Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra on Thursday lambasted the Congress leadership in the state, asserting that the people's interests will not be protected, no matter who takes charge as the Chief Minister, amid speculations around a leadership change.

Speaking with ANI, the state BJP chief affirmed that CM Siddaramaiah is bound to resign today. Accusing the ruling party of creating a financial crisis in the state, he stated that no Congress CM can address the issue.

"Congress high command has already decided to change the leadership in Karnataka. Siddaramaiah is bound to resign, is expected to resign today. But whoever becomes the Chief Minister, the financial crisis that has been created because of the three years Congress government's tenure, I don't think any Chief Minister would be able to address this issue," he said.

"Karnataka is already in a financial distress. There is no development. Farmers are in great distress. Unemployment, youths are very unhappy with the Congress government. Only guarantee... the Congress feels only because of the guarantee they will survive. But the fact is, every section of the society, they are upset with this Congress government. So any Chief Minister replacing Siddaramaiah or even Siddaramaiah continues, I don't think Karnataka's interest will be protected. So in the interest of people of Karnataka, it's better to dissolve the assembly and head for the assembly elections," he stated.

Karnataka Live Updates: DK Shivakumar Arrives At Siddaramaiah's Residence For Breakfast Meeting

Amid speculation regarding a potential leadership change in Karnataka, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar arrived at CM Siddaramaiah's official residence 'Kaveri' in Bengaluru on Thursday for a "breakfast meeting" with key Congress leaders.

Several Karnataka Ministers also arrived at the CM's Siddaramaiah residence, including Priyank Kharge, KJ George, MB Patil, Ramalinga Reddy, and HK Patil, amid tight security.

The meeting comes as conversations over a potential leadership transition have resurfaced intermittently over the past several months, despite repeated assertions from the party leadership dismissing such reports.

There has been constant speculation over the elevation of DK Shivakumar since the Congress government in Karnataka completed half its term, and another round of talks is expected before a final decision, party sources said.

Earlier today, sweets were distributed outside Shivakumar's residence in anticipation of him becoming the next Karnataka Chief Minister.
