Prisoners beat up jailor for trying to seize cellphones

Jaipur: A jailor was beaten up by prisoners in Rajasthan on Tuesday when he tried to confiscate some cellphones and SIM cards from their barracks, police said.

The incident took place in the district jail of Jhunjhunu, some 200 km from here.

"Jailor Rakesh Sharma had seized mobile phones from the barracks of three prisoners," a police officer told IANS.

The officer said he again went to the same barrack and found some SIM cards being used illegally.

"Irked over this, the three inmates beat up the jailor," said the officer.

Senior police and administrative officers rushed to the jail. An investigation has been ordered.

The Rajasthan High Court had, last month, summoned the director general prisons for explanation on reports of cellphones being used by prisoners.

The court had directed the official to conduct sudden inspections, and take action against the authorities of those jails where mobile phones were frequently used and recovered during raids.
