Sujata Mukherjee is dean of faculty of arts and professor of history at Rabindra Bharati University.
Historian Sujata Mukherjee will teach history of modern India with special emphasis on science, gender issues and health care at the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand as the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) visiting Chair for 2016.
Ms Mukherjee is dean of the faculty of arts and professor of history at the Rabindra Bharati University in West Bengal.
"She will be at the university until October teaching history of modern India," a statement said.
Ms Mukherjee has published extensively on modern Indian history, including the book "Situating Tagore's Environmentalism and editing Gandhian Views on Education".
"She (Sujata Mukherjee) is an outstanding scholar and the students are privileged to have an opportunity to learn about India directly from a senior Indian historian," said Jennifer Windsor, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Victoria's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The ICCR Chair was established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Auckland in May between Victoria and the ICCR in the presence of President Pranab Mukherjee.
Under the MoU, a senior Indian academic will visit Victoria University every year to give a public lecture and to teach an under-graduate course on modern Indian history and culture.
