Working women help family tide through recession

Mumbai: At a time when jobs are collapsing, many women who were in jobs that were till now considered rather basic find themselves shouldering the burden of feeding their families.

An observation that aptly describes women like Joyce D'Sa, working as a beautician is helping her family tide through the economic slowdown.

Her husband a door-to-door salesman, is on his third job since September 2008.

In the current economic environment, even that looks shaky.

",He has had trouble sticking to a job. Thank god, I have got a steady job. This way I can take care of my children,", said Joyce.

",There are so many of them who actually take up extra hours at work since their husbands have lost their jobs. Of course, the husbands help out with the children,", said Renu, a salon owner.

A role reversal that Neetu Dudhani hopes her husband Naresh does not have to follow anytime soon. Neetu teaches Math to Class VIII students. Her husband Naresh was laid off from his BPO job in October last year.

The next company he joined also folded up.

",My husband has been between jobs for quite a bit. We also have a home loan and a young daughter to take care of. I'm glad I've got a job,", said Neetu.

Her husband has lasted on third job for a month and Neetu is keeping her fingers crossed.
