A woman was thrashed, her hair cut, and then she was paraded around the village in a half-naked state with a garland of slippers slung around her neck, shows a disturbing video from Jharkhand.
The incident was reported from Piprali village under Dumri police station limits in Giridih district.
According to reports, some villagers alleged that the woman had stolen household goods. Acting on suspicion, a group of residents on Sunday evening caught hold of her, assaulted her and paraded through the village as bystanders recorded videos of the act.
A group of women were seen surrounding the accused, with one woman thrashing her with a thin wooden stick. The accused woman, with young children around her, was paraded around the village, as seen on the video.
As soon as the information was received, police station in-charge Pranit Patel reached the spot with the team and rescued the victim and got her admitted to a hospital for treatment.
Three women have already been detained for their involvement in the assault, while efforts are underway to identify others seen in the viral footage. Officials stressed that strict action will be taken against all those found guilty.
District authorities have condemned the incident, describing it as "inhuman and unlawful".
"The entire matter is being investigated thoroughly. Those responsible will not be spared under any circumstances," said a Giridih police official.
