Civic Poll Verdict Seen As Acid Test For Revanth Reddy Government

Two days after the results of the Telangana local body elections were declared on February 14, the Congress is celebrating a strong and decisive victory across the state. The polls were held on February 12, and elections to the posts of chairpersons, mayors and their deputies were completed on February 16, with voting in 11 municipalities postponed by the State Election Commission.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the Congress and its allies have won 86 chairperson and mayor posts and 84 deputy posts. The BRS has secured 18 chairperson posts and 14 deputy posts. The BJP has won two mayor or chairperson posts and 5 deputy posts. Independents have taken four chairperson and four deputy posts. The CPI has won one mayor post, AIFB has secured one chairperson and one deputy post, CPM has won one deputy chairperson post, and AIMIM has secured three deputy mayor or vice-chairperson posts.

The results are being seen as a major consolidation of power for the Congress government in Telangana. After winning the 2023 Assembly elections, the party has now strengthened its hold at the grassroots level through municipal bodies. In several key urban areas, Congress candidates outperformed their rivals, pushing the BRS further back in the state's political landscape.

The civic win also comes at a politically significant time. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy met senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi last week after the poll process was announced, a meeting that was viewed as strategic coordination between the state and national leadership.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister will be in the national capital for the next two days to attend the India AI Summit, positioning Telangana as an emerging hub in the technology and AI sector even as he consolidates political ground at home.

While the Congress is projecting the results as a clear public endorsement of its governance and welfare promises, the opposition has raised questions after the outcome. Opposition leaders said that the Congress government in Telangana is not fulfilling its promise.

Despite these objections, the numbers from the civic polls clearly show a dominant performance by the Congress across Telangana. With more local body and urban corporation elections ahead, the latest results have given the ruling party a clear momentum going forward.
