New Delhi: Bharti Singh, wife of Union minister VK Singh, has accused a man in Delhi of trying to blackmail her by claiming that he has secretly recorded their conversations.

In a complaint to the police, Mrs Singh has alleged that Pradeep Chauhan, a property dealer known to her family, has phoned her repeatedly over the last week to say that unless he is paid Rs 2 crore, he will post his conversations with her on social media.

In her complaint, Mrs Singh told the police that Mr Chauhan, 27, has a licensed revolver and has threatened her family with harm.

Mr Chauhan, the complaint said, threatened to go public with the doctored audio and video recordings of her. Mrs Singh said she was unsure of the content of those clips, but that Mr Chauhan has been harassing her with phone calls in which he has warned he will ruin her husband's reputation. A case of extortion has been filed against him.

Late on Wednesday night, Mrs Singh's legal team gave the police a downloaded copy of a 2-minute video made by Pradeep Chauhan, which they say is an example of his extortion tactics. The video has since been taken off Youtube.

In the video, Pradeep Chauhan is heard saying that the minister is threatening to kill him and that he will seek help from Rahul Gandhi and the Aam Admi Party.

The legal team said Mr Singh has never met Pradeep Chauhan and Mrs Singh has only met him once or twice.

General Singh retired as army chief in 2012 and then joined the BJP. He is one of two ministers of state for Foreign Affairs.
