Telangana: The Congress concern

Hyderabad: The Central Congress leadership is in a real bind over the demands for the creation of a separate Telangana state.

The pressure in now increasing on the party leadership with MPs from Telangana announcing that they will quit over the issue of Telangana as well.

Andhra Pradesh is burning but bringing the state to the brink of disaster is not just emotions about the divisions of a state but a deep rooted political conspiracy, according to Congress MP from Telangana, Madhu Yaski Goud.

Who fomented trouble is open to debate but what's the way out of it, that's the question worrying the government.

Between the announcements of December 9 and December 23, the Congress has left itself with very little manoeuvring space, with leaders of both regions adopting very strident postures.

Home ministry sources say one view is that a second states reorganisation commission could be the way forward. But Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K Chandrasekhar Rao has rejected any move of setting up states reorganisation commission. He said the panel would not be acceptable and it would be an insult to the people of Telangana.

Eleven of the twelve Congress MPs from Telangana upped the ante on Thursday, announcing that they would quit.

On Wednesday evening after the Centre talked of wider consultations for creating a state of Telangana. Cong MPs from Telangana put up a brave face saying that the Centre has abandoned their cause but after TRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao took an aggressive stance these MPs too carried our resignation drama.

Political analysts say if the law and order situation goes out of hand, President's rule may become a last option.
