Tamil actors contribute to Sri Lankan Tamils Fund

Chennai: Even as financial contribution to Tamil Nadu government's Sri Lankan Tamils Fund continued to pour in, crossing the Rs five crore mark, Tamil actors on Tuesday added to the purse by donating Rs 55.79 lakh.

The actors led by South Indian Artistes' Association president R Sarath Kumar presented a cheque for Rs 55.79 lakh to Chief Minister Karunanidhi, a release said in Chennai.

The fund was started by Karunanidhi to help Sri Lankan Tamils who were affected in the ongoing offensive by Lankan army in the island nation.

Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, noted composer Ilayaraja, film producer AVM Saravanan and Arcot Nawab Mohammad Ali have met the Chief Minister earlier and contributed towards the Relief Fund.

Superstars Rajnikant and Kamalhassan had announced Rs 10 lakh and Rs 5 lakh respectively towards the fund during a fast organised by the SIAA on Saturday to express solidarity with the Sri Lankan Tamils.
