Patna: Bihar politician Lalu Yadav did not hide his annoyance when journalists today asked him on speculation that his sons would contest the state polls later this year. "What else will my sons do if not contest polls - herd buffalos?" the former chief minister said caustically.

Mr Yadav added that politicians' children do contest polls and he is no exception.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal leader has apparently been upset at media reports that there is resentment within the party over his attempts to project his children and that many leaders openly protested at a party meeting on Saturday.

Mr Yadav has not yet clarified exactly how many of his children will contest the election. There are reports that besides his sons, Tej Pratap and Tejasvi, his daughter Misa Bharti will also try her luck in the assembly election. She lost her debut parliamentary election last year in Patliputra.

Tejaswi, a former cricketer, is tipped to be Mr Yadav's "political heir" though his older brother Tej Pratap is also believed to be keen on politics.

Sources say after losing loyalists like Ram Kirpal Yadav, Mr Yadav has increasingly leaned on his own children to carry the party forward, which has not gone down well with veterans. Ram Kirpal Yadav walked out and joined the BJP last year when Lalu Yadav chose to pick his daughter to contest the Patliputra Lok Sabha constituency.
