Section 377: Govt seeks Attorney Gen's opinion

New Delhi: After telling the Supreme Court that the Centre does not want a stay on the High Court order on Section 377, the Union Cabinet has asked the Attorney General of India to assist the apex court in every way to arrive at an opinion on the correctness of the High Court's judgment.

The government is yet to inform the Supreme Court of its stand on Section 377.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had decided against opposing the July 2 judgment of the Delhi High Court striking down provisions in Section 377 that criminalised same-gender, consensual sex.

The government had, however, already told the apex court that it doesn't want a stay on the verdict.
