Guwahati, Assam: Amid tension in Assam's Tinsukia district after the killing a businessman and his daughter earlier this week, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has lashed out at insurgent groups using Myanmar as a safe haven.

Mr Gogoi said, "The safe haven in Myanmar is the number one threat for us, followed by the same in Bangladesh. I had a meeting with the Union Home minister... safe haven should be destroyed to provide security to the North-East. All major groups and their factions, including ULFA (I) NSCN(K), NDFB(S), KLO and KPLT, have their bases in forests of Myanmar."

Earlier on Tuesday, Nandalal Shah, 65, and his daughter, Kajol Shah, 21, were killed, while his wife, son and nephew were injured in indiscriminate firing by suspected ULFA(I) militants in their house at Bijuliban in Tinsukia district.

One person, identified as Dinabandhu Sarma, died when police lathicharged to control a mob protesting against the killings yesterday. "We express our deep sorrow for the death. We'll definitely provide compensation to the family," Mr Gogoi said.

Police sources say, that a hardcore cadre of National Democratic Front of Bodoland or the NDFB (S) carrying a reward of Rs five lakh on his head, has been killed in an encounter with Assam police in Kokrajhar district.

The chief minister also said that he had spoken to the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and sought additional forces, which was promised to be delivered soon.
