Ruchika Girhotra's family withdraws torture charges against former Haryana top cop SPS Rathore

Chandigarh: Ruchika Girhotra's family has withdrawn the torture charges against former Deputy General of Police (DGP) of Haryana SPS Rathore. They have told the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that they have no objection to closing of the case.

The Girhotra family had earlier alleged that Mr Rathore had tortured Ruchika's brother. The CBI had filed a closure report in the case around 20 months back.

Teenager Ruchika Girhotra had committed suicide after allegedly being molested and harassed by the former top cop.

Ruchika Girhotra's father and brother have reportedly withdrawn three cases against Mr Rathore. These cases were filed after public outcry against Mr Rathore following a six-month sentence by a Chandigarh trial court.

"Mr Girhotra (Ruchika's father) is totally frustrated. He does not have the financial or the physical resources to pursue the case. The CBI has 100 per cent favoured Mr Rathore," Anand Prakash, a family friend of the Girhotras and father of Ruchika's friend Aradhana Gupta told NDTV.

A CBI court in Chandigarh had, in December 2009, found Mr Rathore guilty and sentenced him to six years of rigorous imprisonment for molesting the 14-year-old Ruchika on August 12, 1990. He is currently out on bail from the Supreme Court.
