Prison Break Caught on Camera: Murder Convict Escapes, Then Surrenders

A murder convict escaped from a jail in Madhya Pradesh's Narsinghpur on Wednesday

Narsinghpur: In CCTV footage from a prison in Madhya Pradesh, a man is seen taking on a maze of walls with some deft moves before jumping off. It was that simple for a murder convict to escape from a jail in Narsinghpur on Wednesday.

30-year-old Pankaj Pahade, serving a life term after being convicted of murdering his aunt, turned himself in hours later.

Prison officials realized that he was missing a whole hour after his escape, during a head count before prisoners return to the barracks.

Jail officials panicked and scanned CCTV footage only to realise that the scrawny figure in white climbing off the high wall was their convict Pankaj. He was seen climbing one wall, balancing precariously on another and then partly dragging himself on his way to freedom.

A security constable has been blamed for not being vigil enough.

"The constable on duty is at fault as he was not at this post, because of which Pankaj could escape. We have informed the police and they are looking for him," said Amit Mishra, Jail Superintendent.

Pankaj was transferred from a jail in Chhindwara six months ago. He surrendered at the same jail, say the police, which had announced a cash reward of Rs 10,000 on him.
